WOMEN FOR CHANGE/UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION
RECPIENT OF HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD 2018. See more in the “News”
We were delighted to host Women for Change Carbondale at our Human Rights Day Celebration, and present them with our 2018 Human Rights Award. CWU President Martha Schwandt Ellert made the following remarks when presenting the award to Ginger Rye:
The purpose of the Human Rights Celebration, initiated by Church Women United 12 years ago, is to honor individuals or groups who are making progress in the arena of human rights. This is the second year that our Carbondale Unit is presenting this award, and we see Women for Change as a most worthy recipient.
This organization was founded by Ginger Rye on March 16, 2017, after a tragic event on East Willow Street in Carbondale on March 9. Ginger Rye’s young grandson was walking to her home when a man fired a gun at another man, wounding him fatally. Her grandson was close enough to the shooting to come upon the 19-year-old victim as he lay dying. Fed up with the violence that makes it hard for her grandchildren to enjoy the freedom of playing outside her home on the northeast side of Carbondale, Ginger formed the group called Women for Change, intending to address violence and other concerns in the community, and restore the neighborhood back to the one she grew up in. The mission of the organization is to educate and advocate for solutions and seek resources to improve and enhance the quality of life for residents and businesses in the Northeast side of Carbondale through crime prevention, youth advocacy, community clean-up and beautification, as well as networking with other locally based organizations to heighten and intensify civic engagement. Among many other activities, they have hosted a prom dress giveaway for high school students, a celebration for 8th grade graduates, safe Halloween events for young children, voter education, registration and get-out-the-vote drives, including rides to the polls, several neighborhood clean-up events, and they’ve established and maintained a community garden.
We feel that this group deserves the Church Women United Human Rights Award because of their tireless commitment to the community, focusing on but not limited to the Northeast neighborhood, but taking in the greater Carbondale community as well. Their annual “Big Event” brings together diverse groups, with a Unity March featuring religious, environmental, university and civic organizations, followed by a celebration featuring speakers from various community and environmental activist groups, games and activities for youth, information tables for a wide variety of community organizations and voter registration tables. In less than two years, they have accomplished much, and continue to find new ways to educate, support and advocate for the community. They work closely with other like-minded organizations, including Church Women United in Carbondale, and most recently the People’s Climate Movement for Climate, Jobs and Justice. Women for Change would certainly be a model for any organization striving to bring about “Unity in the Community.” — with Martha Schwandt Ellert and Rye Sanders.
